I recently purchased this dime from a dealer who had an MS 63 on this coin I thought it might be a little High But looking at the date I noticed some doubling even though I think it is machine doubling is why I decided to buy the coin, OHH AND THE FACT IT WAS ONLY $5 helped as well!! The dark spot on the reverse could easily be cleaned off, but I didnot want to chance a scratch.
I don't mean to rain on your parade, but the coin looks dipped to me. For what its worth, I agree with the technical grade (MS 63 details), but would net grade it AU 50 for the altered surfaces...Mike
Beautiful Coin As a big fan as well as a collector of Mercury Dimes I would have to say that eventhough it's a beautiful coin, I don't believe it would grade MS. AU50+ because of the light wear on the hair on the obverse and bands on the reverse. Still to me it's a keeper eventhough it lacks luster. Unless your coin dealer is a jerk, I would take it back and ask him why he feels it should grade MS63 with all of the noticeable wear and lack of luster. He might cut you a deal on your next purchase for the mistake. Who knows? :rolling:
i dont see ms either. i can see 53 if you're lucky. by the way all, i'm back. i had some school projects looming. hope to be more active in the future
The coin has great color even though the pics do not show it. In my opinion the coin has never been dipped. Its hard to get a good photo with the camera I have. I also thought there was a little to much wear for a 63 but I liked the date which is doubled.
Welcome back, Julzboi... I don't think the coin has been dipped, but as far as giving it MS-63, well I don't think so. It looks like the coin has received moderate wear on the wings and the fasces on the back appear to have some circulation marks... I'd have to go AU-58.
Wear is wear...and if a coin has wear it is not any of the 60's....it is 58 or below. I have heard of cabinet rub...and that might work on some cases but I would only go for that on RARE coins. Speedy
Here's an AU-UNC full mint lustre but has some teeny nicks. But I paid more than $5,I think you did good.
Thanks for all the info. The dealer I bought the coin off of has been a close friend for many years and has provided me with a lot of great coins over the years. I saw him today and took the coin out of the holder he put it in and ask him what he would grade it after looking at it he said a MS-60 because of the middle band on the rverse. I then showed him the 2X2 I bought it in and he laughed saying I guess I missed that the first time. He tried to give me a few bucks back and I told him no way I was still very pleased with the coin.
