Great old video, loved the banjo playing!! There are alot of CC threads around, and there's one where everyone posted pics, I can't find it tho. I finally got around to getting one of the GSA's. I'm pleased but I still favor my oldie!! Anyone every have that happen to them, you buy a new coin so now you have two but you like the first one better??

I've got the DVD laying around here somewhere, pretty interesting to watch. There used to be a seller on eBay who sold copies, I just took a look but couldn't find him.

 

What did the GSA coins retail for when they went on sale to the public?

 

if memory serves me, $30 however i wasn't around back in the day to see it

There were 7 GSA sales, the first 5 sales were through mail bid. The way it worked was a minimum bid was set by the GSA, and people mailed in their bids. If the coins sold out the highest bids would get the coins, if they didn't sell out the coins would be sold for the minimum bid established by the GSA.

The first sales were for the uncirculated '82, '83 and '84 CCs, the coins didn't sell out and they were sold for the minimum bid of $30.

The second sales consisted of '78, '82-'84, '90, '91 CCs, and the mixed CC, mixed uncirculated, and mixed circulated. Some of the average prices as reported in the VAM book were $16 for the '78-CC, $58 for the '90-CC, $53 for the '91-CC, and $5.50 for the mixed uncirculated.

The third sale was for the '80-CC, '81-CC and '85-CC, they didn't sell out and were sold for the $60 minimum bid.

The fourth sale was for the '79-CC the minimum bid was $300, but they sold out, the average price was $478.

The fifth sale re-offered previously unsold coins, only the '82-CC sold out.

The final two sales had set prices of $65 for the '83-CC, $60 for the '84-CC and $45 for the mixed CC coins.

Lol, no problem. I hope all the prices I have are right, I'm going off a chart I made of them, because I don't have my books with me right now.

Anyone who's interested the VAM book (Comprehensive Catalog and Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace Dollars by Leroy Van Allen and George Mallis) goes into great detail of the sales and the prices, in the 4th edition it's from pages 400-402.

 

I reread the section of the VAM book on the GSA CC sales, and in 7 separate sales, prices for the initial release varied from $15-$40 depending on the date/mm. A later sale of the 1879CC's sold in auction format for an average price of $478. In the last of the CC sales in auction format, prices varied from $45-$180.
