What causes this?

    What causes the doubling of the rim? Noticeable between 3 to 7 O'clock on obverse only. No apparent doubling anywhere else.

    Could be a weak strike.

    I would suggest that the obverse has a very very minor misaligned die. They are common on dimes especially from around that time period.

    Early Kennedy's, 1971-1974, also had what looked like a double rim which was probably due to misalignment of the dies.
