Looking at the teletrade coins tonight. Here are some questions for anybody that could enlighten me (and any other home gamers).

What's up with the position A and position B? Was one of them the error printings when the first came out?

What the SMS type? Are they uncirculated non proof coins?

  3. Position A versus B refers to the direction of the lettering on the edge (or third side) of the coin. I believe that this is random during minting. SMS refers to Special Mint Set so these are the satin finished coins from the annual uncirculated mint sets (2005 and on). TC

SMS refers to the Special Mint Sets that were produced from '65-'67. There were no "Proof Sets" issued in those years as the proof making was moved from the Philly Mint to San Fran Mint. SMS took the proof sets place.

Positions A and B, IMHO, is simply another way to have collectors buy more coins. The positioning of the edge letters to the face of the coin is random, so eventually, these positions should be equal in availability.

I prefer to choose one position, B (edge letters upright when coin is showing obverse) and that's it. I don't need to double my purchase.

There were also no Presidential dollars made those years either.

In the case of the presidential dollars, they're referring to 2005 to date mint sets.
