Anyone know what the percentage of zinc is in a nickel and any information regarding the levels of base metal in nickels over the years if it has changed?
This site has a lot of detailed information: http://www.treasurerealm.com/coinpapers/USCoins/five_cent.html
What is a nickle? Here is some information for ya' From 1946 to 2010 there is/was 75% copper, 25% nickel. So from what I can see, there is no zinc. http://www.coinflation.com/coins/1946-2007-Jefferson-Nickel-Value.html Now in 1942-1945 there was 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese http://www.coinflation.com/coins/1942-1945-Silver-War-Nickel-Value.html Still no zinc.
75% copper, 25% nickel. To my knowledge, zinc wasn't used in nickels. 1942 is when they switched to silver, copper, and manganese when nickel was needed for the war effort. The used 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese. Prior to that, 75% copper, and 25% nickel was used.
If I remember correctly Roger Burdette did find that they did use a small amount of zinc with the war nickels because it helped with the alloying of the manganese to the copper and silver. It also reduces the amount of energy needed to create the melt.
