Well, I took it into a professional jeweler today and here are the results... Coin and Holder: 11g Quarter sized Holder (4 staples): 2.5g Approx. coin weight: 9.5 grams I talked to a guy today that used to do Gold panning and was into coins. He told me that Gold is one of the heaviest metals, so it's actually good that it weighs more and not less. He said any kind of metal a counterfeiter would have used would be lighter. So if it was a fake it should weigh less than 8.3 grams. He said it could be that the planchet is slightly bigger that usual and heavier... I'm going to send it to Anacs this week, also. What'd you think? Thanks again, SM
Oh, I wouldn't send it to ANACS, If I were you I'd just keep and enjoy it for years and years. A potential family heirloom in the making. You could pass down. Glad your happy
So you wouldn't mind having a possibly counterfeit heirloom, Bone? I think gold coins should be certified because there are so many counterfeits. JMHO, Charlie
I would send it to ANACS....as for Bone...if you want to hand it down raw...crack it out. I sent all key date and better date coins into ANACS...just my funny little thing. They sell better #1....the are faster to get rid of #2....and with a slab you can sell them sight-un-seen #3. Most other coins I would keep raw. (that is unless they are...PR Franklins...and RED IHC...or old proof coins....) Speedy
(Last Post On Topic) Whatever happened to the good in people, looking beyond the authenticity of a coin. Seeing something fragile and maybe easily broken which has vastly more value than a quarter sized chunk of metal. Am I the only one who senses this, alas... Bone
No Bone, you're not alone - far from it. But when I think back over the past 45 yrs and all the times I kept my mouth shut - and then think of what I might have prevented for somebody if I hadn't ........ I'd rather voice my concerns and be wrong - I sleep better at night that way.
