I found a coin I want to buy - good looking, price is right, but it's NGC, and I'm doing a PCGS set registry. I feel pretty stupid, but still feel like I should stick with PCGS. thoughts?

If you have any doubts, you're going to regret it. Regardless of what you decide to do. I know from experience.

I have the same problem, but with ANACS slabs (my sets on NGC) but ya know what? I like the coin so i buy it, you can always cross em if you really want to. Buy the coin, not the holder

Depends on the coin. If it is a common date and low budget item then just show patience and wait for a nice PCGS coin. If it is something tougher like a key date high budget item, then I would buy the coin and cross it over. Assuming the coin is graded correctly and will cross to the same grade.

    Not dumb.

Since you are doing a PCGS Registry Set, an NGC coin won't work.
You have your standards for your set.
If you like it, buy it and do a crossover.

it's a 13-s type 2 buffalo in AU. Not easy to come by.

    Agreed.
    Mine is a raw VF.

Early Buffaloes tend to come either MS or VF and below.
Finding XF's and AU's is NOT easy.
I had the same trouble finding my 1915-S (XF-45 CAC).

It depends upon what you value for your collection. If you value the uniformity and completeness of all PCGS certified coins and do not want to go through the effort and uncertainty of the crossover process then you may want to continue your search. If, however, you value the coin itself much more than your participation in the PCGS registry and/or you are willing to go through the effort and accept the uncertainty of the crossover process then you may want to purchase the coin.

I do not collect Buffs so I cannot write from personal experience, but I do collect early Federal coinage and I did not hesitate when I found the perfect circulated 1817/3 Capped Bust half in an NGC holder even though my collection is likely 90% PCGS certified. I also never sent the coin in for crossover and simply enjoy it for what it is. By the way, you may or may not be aware as this might not be in your collecting niche, but if you attempt to find the perfect circulated 1817/3 Capped Bust half that has never been abused in the past you will see it is an incredibly tough coin to locate.

This coin is more common in high grades (AU and up) than low ones. My feeling -- buy it and cross it, but only if you really like the coin.

buy the coin, not the slab. you can always crack it out and send it in to the slabber of your choice. it's not that hard. :hammer:

Some folks are recommending that if you like the coin, then buy it & cross it over to PCGS. Just recognize that not all coins will cross to the same or higher grade.

I also think that Murphy's law applies. The probability of a coin crossing to PCGS is inversely proportional to the desire to complete your registry set.

    Very best regards,

P.S. I have a nice proof Liberty nickel collection in matching white NGC holders. I know what it is like to have one coin that just will not cross......

Good luck with your decision. Personally I buy the coin and not plastic...

For me it's how fat my wallet is at the time. I have no self control as far as keeping with a goal for a set. I'm just a sucker for a cool coin.

    .....And not the slab! ;)

You can always send the coin into PCGS as a crossover. A small price to pay for a nice coin in your collection.
