I purchased a 1894 $10.00 U.S. gold coin up here in Canada.Anyone know if these were ever counterfeited?Do I have to buy with caution when purchasing old U.S. gold coin?If yes what years do I watch for?
I am new to buying coins.Thanks.

Best bet is to buy slabbed, PCGS or NGC. ANACS is ok.

While starting out, go with slabbed coins till you are comfortable with your knowledge.

To further expound- when starting out buy PCGS, NGC or maybe ANACS in AU-58 grade. You will learn to see wear, learn why it is considered circulated.
And you won't be paying the big bucks.

You have a terrific user name. I saw Rush in concert a few dozen times from the 1970s into the 1990s. As for your question; US gold is and always has been very heavily counterfeited.

Heard my first Rush 8track in about 1974 when they had John Rutsy on drums.Actually went to a concert when they were promoting the 2112 album in Pt.Huron,MI.Wish I still had the T-shirt.I hope this message doesn't appear on coin talk.Who would ever think someone that collects coins would be a RUSH fan.
