Nice FAO release. I have the first uruguayan FAO release showcased in a thread. I think there are a lot of sleepers both design wise and mintage wise in this series.
Great coin Siberian Man, I always thought Cyprus used the Cyprus pound! I suppose I was getting Malta mixed up with Cyprus, but I digress.
Cyprus did indeed use the pound; until 1983 one pound was 1000 mils. Then, between 1983 and 2007, it was 1 pound (lira) = 100 cents (sent). So this FAO coin would be a 50 sent piece. The woman depicted is a dryad by the way ... Christian
The 5 mils coin I find interesting as it shows an object which is about 3,000 years old. That is an "oxhide" ingot bearer from Kourion - somebody carrying a bronze ingot in the shape of an oxhide. The depiction is a detail of this object which is now in the British Museum in London. (Click on the image in the link to get an enlarged view.) And this is what such an ingot looks like ...
