First off, welcome to CoinTalk! I am not too big on collecting U.S. coins but I am sure people will be along shortly that can answer these questions!

Those are all very common pieces, worth no more than a few dollars, but they are very neat :) now what "error" are you refering to?

    WELCOME TO THE FORUMMMMMMMMMMM
Since your attempting to start your son into this hobby, just give him all of those. Ignor statements about not being worth a lot since pending on your kid'a age, they are to him worth thousands or millions.
Way, way back my Dad got me into coins by giving me some of those brand new shinny, Silver colored pennies that just came out. He saw I like them so continued finding them for me and even by the rolls. That was in 1943 and I still have every one he gave me. No they were not valuable then and still nothing to rave about monitarily but to me then and now, worth???, PRICELESS.

Welcome to CT. The Kennedy bicentennial half with the S mintmark is a proof, and someone must have removed it from the set to put in circulation.

There were 7,059,099 struck at San Fransisco. If the coin has not lost it's proof appearance, ie mirror field and frosty relief, you should put it into a 2x2 cardboard flip to protect it. Hopefully, there are no scratches on either side of the coin. Proof dual date Kennedys can run around $2.75 - $4.

CO Girl, welcome to the neighborhood!

First off, the Kennedy half dollar is not an error. The dual-date Bicentennial coins (dollar, half dollar and quarter dollar) were struck for both years, 1975 & 1976. They are made of 40% Silver (also called Silver Clad).

What concerns me is that you said the customer also used one gold dollar for his purchase. Though I don't collect gold, I don't think gold dollars have been struck since 1886. It's quite possible that it is counterfeit and the customer scammed you. It's an old trick that con artists use. If I'm wrong, and the coin is real, it is worth a whole lot more than one dollar.

Please post photos of the gold coin if you can.

    :)WELCOME!

No pun intended, but you have "golden" opportunity to involve your son in a hobby which builds character, 99.99% of the time increases in value and can teach him monetary as well as historic value of our currency system.

This is the most valuable thing you received from that customer! There is a wide variety of books at the library:) for free. One note; start him at a leval he understands and with farely inexpensive coins!

I'm thinking it's one of the presidentials that many people refer to as a gold dollar because it's a much lighter shade of copper, and some think it looks gold.

Welcome to the forum. Post any questions you may have here.

Consider buying some inexpensive Whitman folders for the Eisenhower dollars, Kennedy half dollars, etc. Also get your son a copy of The Guide to US Coins which is commonly called "The Red Book".
