James Earle Fraser with his sculpture (The End Of The Trail). He also designed the famous buffalo nickel and used 3 different indian models for the obverse. He used the famous buffalo from the New York Zoological Garden ( Black Diamond ) as a model for the reverse. Black Diamond died in 1915 and was slaughtered for his meat which was packaged in packs stating Black Diamond Steaks. His hide was recycled as and automobile rug and his head was put on display at the butchers shop. His head remains in the hands of a private collector today and remains a popular attraction. How cool is that?:)

Yeah I got to agree there. I know we eat animals but I guess it's different when you don't know them before. So if I saw a package with an animals name on it, I think it would be like eating a pet or friend.

Actually those are working models for his sculpture. The actual scupture is something closer to life size so maybe 10 foot high.
