Questions on Possible Proof?

Ok guys, just picked this coin up yesterday and was kinda confused. It clearly looks like a proof. Date is 1882-O but when I look in the redbook, there arent any proofs. Really confused as to the explaination behind this. Any help guys?:hug: (Sorry the pics arent the best)

It is a prooflike coin. Do a search on here and you should find a few threads about them.

 

that looks more prooflike than I have ever seen……..I dont collect morgans so I dont know

From that picture I'd think PL is possible. Dont think it would get a DMPL tough.

Question? Is that a crescent moon shaped haze on the coin or artifact of the image.

Proof Morgan silver dollars were struck in Philadelphia, so once you saw the "O" mint mark, it would have ruled out the possibility of it ever being a proof.
There were approximately 1,100 proofs struck in Philly in 1882

 

Yea even if there is some rub on it...it still looks nice a frosty

It looks Cameo Like as well as Proof Like. Is this what Duke calls frosty?

It amazes me what people will buy when they know absolutely nothing about it. You are right about one thing. The photos are terrible, and it would be impossible for anyone to tell if the coin is PL or just severely polished.

Please forgive me if I sound mean or harsh, but it seems that recently we have gotten an inordinate number of newcomers who want to know if they "did good" when they bought oil stocks for a well on Martha's Vineyard.

New to collecting Morgans? No! I started collecting them in 1957.

You fail to see the point. No one can tell from those photos if the coin is PL or has been harshly cleaned. If it has been cleaned, it's worth $15. So, the buyer has lost $15.

From north49guy's comments, he doesn't appear to be familiar with Morgan dollars, and that is why I referred to him as a newcomer. That suspicion was reinforced when he mentioned the Red Book. No veteran collector of Morgans uses the Red Book as a primary resource. Collecting Morgan dollars is not like collecting Lincoln cents or bust halves or buffs or jeffs. There are more than 3000 varieties.

Look, I'm still recovering from surgery, and now I've got the flu which I could have only caught at the doctor's office since I've been nowhere else. I apologize for my short temper, but I just hate seeing someone spend money on something, about which, they know nothing.

I agree. That's MS if ever I saw one. 63, maybe 64.

 

I'll say you did. That coin is undergraded, definitely MS, not AU. It's no less than MS-63, could be a 64. So for $30 you did great.

MS-63 around $45

MS-64 around $100
