http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/sear5/s2650.html Her is a pretty worn dupondis. I think it's Domitian with STA in ex and maybe Ceres. Any ideas? Thanks Bone
I think you are exactly right...I'm guessing your computer is back in service? Domitian AE Dupondius. CAESAR AVG F DOMITIAN COS VI, laureate draped bust right / CERES AVGVST S-C, Ceres standing left holding corn ears & long torch. This is NOT your exact coin or mint but close enough.
Well after all that,I'm having second thoughts about your coin. The style of the portrait with the giant head, neatly trimmed beard, big square jaw and thin double stranded headband or crown does not match up with 1st century Roman coins and in fact, looks like every late 3rd to 4th century Byzantine Bronze coin I have. Can you read any of the inscription?
How about Galerius w/Genius from Heraclea, Galerius as Caesar, AE Follis. 294 AD. GAL VAL MAXIMIANVS NOB CAES, laureate head right / GENIO POPVLI ROMANI, Genius standing left holding patera from which liquor flows & cornucopiae, HTE in ex. http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/ric/galerius/i.html RIC 18 b, D Bone
LOL...good job! I almost posted JUST the Galerius photo without the other three because HE had the biggest head of all...these Byzantine guys really do stand out..literally. EDIT...NOT to mention the fact that I have the exact same coin...DOH!
Hello Bone It is a follis From what I read, I'd rather say CONSTANTIUS. OK with GENIO POPULI ROMANI on reverse, Heraclea mint first officina (HT stands for Heraclea, A for first officina) Cucumbor
could very well be Constantius, the inscription is pretty much illegible but I based my identification on the large head in the portrait. The only two emperors with that big of a noggin were Galerius and Constantine I himself. I'll go with big G but who knows?
If you look carefully over his head you can see S T A N T I, which, in my opinion, solves the problem Cucumbor
cucumbor, you're right,I can see it too..nice work! See bonedigger? Ya just have to get the right angle and light and those inscriptions just POP out...:goofer:
