I am sending an otherwise MS-62 to MS-64 1892 CC Dollar to NGC in a week or so and it has 2 pretty small marks on the edge that do not really affect the rim. I want to know if they will still place a numerical grade on it since it is a high grade or how severe the dings have to be to qualify it for only details grading. Also what is the market value difference between a regular certified coin and a details graded coin? Would it be smarter to opt out of the details grading option and have it sent back raw if they won't place a number on it? Sorry, my camera bit the dust and my phone won't do close ups so no pics right now. Any info or photo examples would be appreciated. Thanks
From your description, I suspect you'll simply have the grade reduced to MS-60 or MS-61 because of the small marks. It has to get fairly bad to be considered damaged. Where is that line? I'm not sure, but this was bad enough:
If it does get body bagged (purple label) for damage they will give it a detail grade. If this is your first submission I would recommend you get someone else to look at the coin before you send them to NGC. Usually first time submitters get burned big time and end up getting mad and frustrated. It depends but they usally sell for a lot less. Since you are already paying to get the coin graded you should just get it slab. People still want to know that the coin is genuine.
"How bad is too bad ?" Always a tough call. Post a pic and you'll get a better-informed answer. If it doesn't affect the obverse or reverse view of the coin, your odds are good it won't drop you into "damaged" category, Heck, MS60 coins have nicks all over both sides; why wouldn't they have a nick or two on the edge ?
...it's wise to get an opinion BEFORE sending a coin to a TPG. it could save you a bunch of money. if you feel you want a slabbed coin, buy one ALREADY slabbed. jmo
Coinsnake, something to ponder. If the coin wasn't handed to you by say your Grandfather who had it tucked away in his sock drawer for the last 50 years, there is probably a good reason this coin is not already encapsulated...what, it's been almost 25 years since the grading services started going over coins. Now, there is a possibility that this Carson City has never seen the inside of a grading room, but highly unlikely. If you purchased this from a dealer or off the internet, chances are this coin has been submitted before and either body bagged (pre 2009) in a flip or detail graded and cracked out to re-sell. Good advice here about getting a second opinion from a Numismatist before spending money on top of money that will get you no where. But who knows, you might catch the graders on a good day and it passes...that happens. Good Luck and Happy Collecting
By themselves none of those rim dings would stop the coin from being graded. But all together - they probably would.
Morgan Dollar possible bodybag. Please help Heres pics of the 1892 CC morgan I want to send to NGC. Please help with opinions on the possibility of damage and details grading. I'm hoping that it won't come to that. Please tell me your thoughts. Thanks
The rim bump @ 12 O'clock high on the obverse is minor, the rim ding @ 6 O'clock low on the reverse is going to be a judgment call by the grader. The combination of the sum of PMD to the rims is never consistent with valuable coins so it is really hard to sit here and say one way or the other. You'd think it would automatically lower the numerical grade and possibly into an upgradeable state, it is just very hard to say at this point. It may sound wishy washy to you, but there are no definitions as what is acceptable and what's not.
This would go in as a slider. Would it grade? yes defintely However a major TPG would put it as an AU-58 or MS60. IMO However I do believe there is a TPG called CNGS that specializes in CC and they will give it a higher grade closer to a 62 or 63, since they dont consider rim dings into their grading process.
There are numerous third-world slabbers like the one you mention that will overgrade the coin and overlook problems, but for veteran collectors, it still won't get better that AU money. Chris
I see rim damage on the coin, and from some pictures the coin doesn't look right. I don't think this coin will grade.
I can see slight signs of cartwheel luster, but the pictures were taken with terrible lighting, and the camera not really in focus either, as you can see from the pictures. In one of the pictures the coin almost whizzed. I think better pics would be needed to determine if it was cleaned...or we could always wait for the results to come in
I sent this the coin in on June 9th. Online status has said Quality Comtrol for a week so I called customer service for an update and got some great news. It DID receive a grade! I'll post pics and let you all guess at it when I receive it. Check back!
Congratulations! Since it did grade, I'll take a stab based on your photos that it graded MS64. Chris
