Looking through a $25.00 box of pennies and found this somewhat damaged coin. It looks like the date is tripled and the MM is doubled. But none of the words on the obv are doubled from what I can see.

Please forgive me in advance for posting so many photos in this thread.

 Is there such a thing as Machine Tripling? It looks like machine doubling that is tripled. Its pretty darn neat and a keeper, nice pics too...:hail:

ok I guess it is machine doubling

    after reading the article at:
    http://doubleddie.com/144822.html
I guess my 1970-S is machine doubling which is apparently very common.
I do wonder why some of the numbers show tripling.
Is it possible to have an authentic double die that also has machine doubling on the date and mint mark? That would sort of explain why the date is tripled and the mint mark is doubled.

It can have DD and MD on the date, but not the MM. The MM may be an RPM with MD.
If the Date & MM both are doubled 99.99% chance that it is MD. Is this confusing?

Well , for 1 I am not a very lucky person. Secondly the article I linked to above does say that a genuine DDO can also have MD. The article and photographs specific to the 1970-S says that a double MM is a pretty good sign of MD. But that still does not adequately explain the date tripling for me and probably all the CT members that are patient enough to put up with my "I think I founds...":rolling:

Here are a couple of photos of my 1970 with machine doubling ( tripling). I kept it as it is a very interesting cent.

Yeah, it is a neat one, and a keeper... I have found a number of '72's with similar doubling... I see where the date might appear tripled but I don't see anything that would indicate a ddo AND md... All looks like md, imo... Both of the lower 'layers' appear to have the sheared-off, flattened effect of md... And you are not so very unlucky... DDO are just not all that common all in all... I looked through a $25 box last week and got two 1960 d/d sd/ld, a 1956 d/d, AND a 2000 wide am... Figured I was just due to find something... :)

Nice find... and just keep up the search!

I had posted it on another forum more than a year ago and although I thought the "9" MD was rather odd in that it was so high on the 9 rather than being flattened. But after the big boys, including Mike Diamond, said all MMD, I labeled it and put it aside. Maybe someday I will get an original bag of 1970P to see if I can find any more.
