I just inherited a 1899 Moragan Silver Dollar. The odd part is on the Heads side of the coin, there is a large D on the cheak.. What does this mean? Is it a error? Any idea of how much its worth?

    thanks in advance

    Welcome to the neighborhood!

In all likelihood, it is Post Mint Damage (PMD), but we would still need to see photos to be sure.

Well, that's definately a "D". Counterstamp, but for what reason I know not......

I don't know why it's there but that is a Huge Counterstamp. Your Morgan is pretty much worth silver melt value.

Check the reverse and see if there is a mintmark.. if not even with the D its worth FAR more than silver bullion.

Is Silver Melt value good? Roughly how much? Is it worth keeping?

Hard to tell from that pic, but looks like a pocket piece. And that counter stamp is huge!

  13. I agree. If this is an 1899P Morgan, then it is likely worth a lot more than silver melt value due to the limited mintage (only 330,846). TC

Yep. Be sure to flip it over and see if these is a letter underneath the bow in the ribbon. It will either be an "S", an "O", or a very large "D" :)

If there is nothing, it is the 1899-P TC referred to. It retains some value even in very low grades. And hey... some people like counterstamps !

The back has a 0 under the bow of the Eagle

thanks to everyone for the replys.. and sorry for the crappy picts. There is a 0 at the bottom of the eagle.
So if you were to put a rough dollar value, how much would you say its worth. $50, $100, $500 ?

    Thanks again

  16. Now I think it is worth about silver melt maybe a few dollars more. Check out coinflation.com for silver coin values. You said you inherited it though, so maybe there is some sentimental value to you. TC

On a good day on ebay youd get about 28$ for it which would net you about 20 after fees and shipping.

Since your ID is Dcaruso, maybe your first name begins with a D, or maybe father, grandfather's name does also. I would keep it as a "pocketpiece" as a conversation, lucky piece, or maybe get an inexpensive bezel key ring for it to have on my keys.

    Welcome to the forum!

FYI, Silver melt for Dollars is about $13.50 with silver about $17.50. All other silver 90% is worth about 12 1/2 times face.
