this just got back from Ngc. I think I should have added the extra cash for full details.what do you think???
Are you talking how all four digits of the date moved up? That does not make it a VAM if that's it...
Are you talking about the 1888 Vam-10? If so that does not talk about the shadow effect of the 4 digits that have all slid up. That happens but it does not make a VAM as far as I know. And I believe that is what Jello is talking about. If we look closer at the Ear and it's doubled and the tail feathers to see if it has those notches it might just be that Vam but not for the date moving up but for those two things I just mentioned and the slant in the last eight. Or am I missing something?
First of all, every Morgan is a VAM. A normal coin for each date/mm is usually VAM-1. I only mentioned the VAM-10 because I wanted to illustrate the slanted date. As a rule, I don't try to identify specific VAM's from photos. My eyes just aren't that good any more. I think what jello was referring to was the slanted date with the "1" closer to the denticles and the last "8" being farther away from the denticles. This was due to the logotype being improperly aligned when the date was punched into the working die. I'm not completely sure what you are referring to when you speak of the shadows, but if you mean the lighter area beneath the last two 8's in the date, that is an artifact of the toning and has nothing to do with the positioning of the date. It does look like a vam 10. NGC would not designate a vam on it. Here is their list they do designate. http://www.ngccoin.com/VPSubCategory.aspx?subid=23 With out having it in hand, I can not say positively, but the shadows may just be metal flow / die fatigue. That would not be something they would make mention of.
I don't know for sure, but it looks to me like the last 8 is inverted. VAM 28 lists this and doubling on the rest of the date, but no pics available on vamworld. Also VAM 30. Hard to really tell looking at pictures. Great coin no matter whathya: That is what I like so much about Morgans, so many of them have small die characteristics that make them interesting.
I think you can rule out the VAM 30. This is my first VAM ID, but the guide would indicate that this coin's date is in normal position and the 30 is Near. You can also rule out the 10 since Jello's had normal date spacing between Liberty and the rim while the 10 spacing is obviously closer to the rim. Jello, for future reference, expanding the date image closeup to include the 'V' would be helpful. I also don't see doubling at the ear which is a marker for 28.
