At the fast food place the other day I used some Halves and a SBA $1....the girl was about 18 maybe 19 and asked..."what are these???".....so I told her and then counted them out again for her...she said..."I wish they would stop changing our money".
I said...."Oh we have had Half dollars since 1794 and I don't think they change too much"....
She gave me the wierddest (sp?) look......(I wonder why)
I think I'll have to try this more.....I've done it before but some people here just take it and don't ask so that takes the fun out of it.
But every-now-and-then I hit a real winner..... :thumb:

    crispy1995 Spending Toms like crazy**

It's sad that people in this country don't know about their own currency.
As a New Year's resoloution, run down o the bank, buy a roll of sackies and/or halves and spend them to either get into trouble or help put them into circulation.

When I use half dollars to purchase something I get the response of "haven't seen these for a long time or some people think they are dollars. It is also fun to watch them count them up because they get lost in the counting.

$2 bills are good too...here is what I did one time...

I can't remember what the total was to the dollar but I gave a....
    $2 bill
    $1 SAC
    $1 SBA
and a half dollar or two.....

I thought I was going to get kicked out.

I remember when my daughter was in kindergarden. Her teacher told the class what the coins were and their values. Well I got a call from the teacher saying that my daughter said that there are others like a (2 cent piece) and the teacher said that my daughter was telling the class things that were not true. It came down to the point that the teacher didn't believe her. Guess what came up the next day "SHOW AND TELL" My daughter asked me if she could bring a 2 cent piece. I said to my self "YES" another coin collector in the family.

I got another call on my answering machine the next day it was from the teacher. It was to my daughter that she was sorry she didn't believe her.

Not only do the young kids need to be educated about coins but also adults.

I would have loved to see the face of the clerk if you added in an IKE Dollar. They also get mad because you fill up their extra coin slot that they use for extra rolls.

Did she also take a 3 cent piece and a 20 cent piece and a 1/2 cent piece!!!???
    That would have been great!

Yes Ike's would have been fun but none of the banks around here get them and to buy them from dealers are a little more than I want to...that is if I'm just going to spend them

I don't have any 20 cents but i thought about sending in a 1/2 cent and 3 cent. Just emangine the teachers face. The worst thing is that I'm a teacher and I know how some teachers think that they are right and the kids can't be. Well my daughters teacher was one of those teachers who thought she knew it all and the kids had the last laugh

When I cash my paycheck twice a month I always get some JFK's, Sacajeweas, and $2 bills. The places I have the most fun with them are the drive throughs at Taco Bell, Wendy's, and Mickey-D's.

I wish we could do that here more ofton unfortunatly all we realy have that are a bit out of the normal are £5 coins, and yes I have had the odd raised eyebrow about one or two of them and once had the police called to a cafe as I was paying for 4 meals using the then new £2 coins LOL we ended up all going to the local bank to have them confirmed as legal tender coinage :goofer: :mouth: :mouth:

I know exactly what you mean. I routinely pay for stuff in Half's. I like to search through rolls but I really don't have extra cash to buy rolls to search and return. I usually buy $30 to $40 dollars worth every pay day and spend them through out the week. I can't remember how many times I have been asked how much a half is worth. I usually reply that the denomination is printed on the back. On very rare ocasions a fast food worker will flip it over and after "reading" the coin they will ask again. :desk:

I normally follow the second question by saying that they are worth 1 dollar each and the rest is a tip.

I paid for $5.50 in fast food with halves last week. She said, "Did you mean to give me $11?"

I think I really hack the guy at the gas station off though, once a week I take my car and fill it up and pay in halves ($20 -$24). Then I go right back with my van ($25 - $30).

Can your bank order $2 bills? I havn't asked them. HOw many do you have to order? My bank doesn't want to order halves unless I take the whole box (fine by me). I imagine they'd want me to take the whole order of $2 bills.

    Can they order Ikes also?

I don't think the majority of people are aware that over 130 years ago, a two cent coin was minted for a short 9 years (the last year being only proofs), nor that for a short three years, a twenty cent coin was issued (with relatively few produced). Fewer people at the time probably knew than know today.

Just because we're (and I say this affectionately) coin geeks, doesn't mean most people are. I could probably count on one hand the times I've gotten a half dollar in change from anyone, so it isn't surprising that people react in a puzzling way when they are handed one. Same goes for SBA or even the Sacs. They just aren't circulating like dimes, nickles, quarters, and pennies. Thus I think it's a bit much to say, "It's sad that people in this country don't know about their own currency."

The 20 cent coin met the same fate as Susan B. Anthony dollars and in the same number of years too.(excluding the '99 SBA's of course)
