Here is an 1814 which I was able to snag for much less than you'd suspect. Nodoubt because (DP) felt compelled to etch initials into it.

Ahh..we seem to have stumbled upon a 19th century hobby. That's the third or fourth one that has been posted here recently with initials on it.

If it were stamped initials, they can actually increase the value for many coins, especially if the person's identity is known.

Wouldn't mind initials on my coin if it otherwise looked as nice as this. An initialed coin may just make something like tihs affordable to me, lol.

It's possible it was intended to be a love token.

Who knows  I got it on Ebay and the seller just mentioned it had initials scratched into it.

even with initials tagged on there it is a pretty cool half...especially because you probably snagged it for nothing

This is beginning to sound like a very cool emerging market in the hobby, initialized 18th and 19th century coins ...

No, more like a memento. It was the custom in times past for a person to give his/her lover a coin, often inscribed with initials as a symbol of their love.

And this is what makes Coin Collecting so interesting. That is very cool.

An 1814 is a pretty difficult date to snag. I have another one in much worse condition but w/o the initials. This cost me around $50.00 and fitting right into my plan of acquireing the set at under $100.00 per coin. A year ago it would have been easy except for the 1815, but now :( BTW, I love the history associated with these and wonder who's held this coin thru it's history. Hey, maybe Jean Lafitte! He's practically a hero in South East Texas.
