Brazilian coins anyone?

    Many folks don't realize that during Colonial times and even after the formation of the United States, Brasilian coinage was often used to conduct large monetary transactions!

    It wasn't until 1859 (Act of February 21, 1857) that they lost their legal tender status [in the U.S.] for use in transactions.

    I love the details in these coins. US coins just dont seem to have as much detail as some of the other countries coins. I love US coins but some of these others are awesome

    Here is a slightly older Brazilian coin. A 960 reis, 1819, Rio de Janeiro mint. As with many of these crowns, it is struck over a Spanish colonial coin, in this case an 8 reales of Carlos IV from the Mexico City mint, dated 1789.
