I have seen on here people giving advice on which dealers are not good and which are good, etc. Can anyone tell me about Norwood Coin? They run two page ads in Coinage and I do not see anything negative, nor positive, so was wondering if anyone has dealt with them!! Thanks!!
Never dealt with them, but typically I stay away from dealers in the magazines. I usually use online dealers where I can see the coins. just my opinion of course. Not saying all magazine dealers(or ads) are bad.
I've made several purchases from Norwood in the past, and I don't have any complaints about them. Their prices seemed to be fair, and the coins I recieved were graded properly...
While I normally agree with you I have bought from L and C coins in a magazine and also from Stephen Musil--all times great coins, properly graded, decent prices, and fast service. I would recommend these two anytime. I also bought once years ago from Paul Sims. I lived like literally 10 miles away from him and so I asked if I could come by and pick up my purchases to save on shipping. Whomever I spoke with said yes, and when I got there, they looked very annoyed with me. Why are you here? You should have them shipped, etc. Luckily I wrote down the name of the guy. They let me in and while he was writing up the bill , I looked at my coins. They all seemed nice but then I was not as well known to the grading part of coins, so not sure if I got any sliders--hell I do not remember what I even bought anymore...lol But I know they were not knowledgable at all. I had ordered a 1913 Buffalo nickel. He had out in front of me a 1913 $5 Gold. I told him he had the wrong coin, pointed to it. He looked at the bill, said nope it is right. Told him no, he said, I know coins, and you are still a novice. I was ****ed, so I shut up deteremined to get a nice gold coin for a cheap price. That is when his supervisor came by and looked at the bill, and said, hey, you gave him the wrong coin. I laughed and he looked annoyed. Almost had a great coin, even when gold wasn't worth **** then--lol
If I were to buy from any dealer that lists two page ads I would start with a cheaper coin at a specific grade they listed. Do some reading - do you agree with the grade? I would also check return policies and the dreaded restocking fees. I have done the same with "online" dealers. Anyone that charges a restocking fee is out for sure. BIG RED FLAGS IN MY BOOK. Next, knowing a local dealer that you can show the coin to (as well as people on forums like CT) can be EXTREMELY helpful. Cover your bases before you commit. If it works out great. If it doesn't cross them off your list.
Some advice for working with a dealer new to you... Always ask their return privilege. Run away if it's anything but no-questions-asked and without any restocking or return fees. Always ask about their terms of sale. Read it carefully.
