    Hi everyone,

I'm brand new to paper money. I dabble in ancients for fun but have never been a serious collector. I love history though, and when I learned that CSA money and obsolegtes were within reach I couldn't help myself. I'm thinking of collecting obsoletes from MI (where I'm from) and CSA money with ships on it. I'm a college student so it's going to be a slow process of getting new notes.

I'm thinking of these three to start my collection:

Any thoughts or comments on them? Think it's a good place to start?
I've been reading tons of posts on this site and it seems to be a great place to learn a lot of info. Thanks for the help!

I really like the second note. Also, Ann Arbor stamp & coin is pretty close to you and reasonable.

I started with obsoletes in Paper money & would start from there. You get some good notes in great shape if you buy remainders (unsigned /undated )with some beautiful vignettes. As you get hooked on them you'll want to expand your obsoletes to signed & dated or both. In my opinion obsoletes are a affordable alternative to the expensive notes in most instances.
Later on you may want to collect Small or large size FRN or whatever you like.
But a good start is obsoletes (IMO)

    Jess:

The 1st thing you must do (or at least consider) for yourself as a collector is to read about and study the Series of Notes that you want to collect. Many times folks start off realizing that finishing a set may be very difficult due to a very rare and expensive note that would be required. I have been and currently am into a situation like this with 1 note of the 5 Issues produced that there are only 2 examples of it known to exist..will I ever finish it? Well I do not think so...but but the 1st 4 were sure a challenge all themselves.

Look and see what will be required to satisfy your quest and try to start with the key notes...***Warning*** Paper Money can get expensive very fast as well as working it's way into your blood..LOL

Good luck on your venture, there are many fine folks here to help you along the way. Professor Kelly is a Great and Knowledgeable man...you can be assured what he has to offer is legit in every way (unless so stated)

Thanks everybody for the tips! I am collecting mostly for the history of the bills, so I doubt I'll ever try to collect a whole series. Now if only I can resist to buy some more.... I could live off Ramen for a little while.....

I was looking into confederate bills also. They are just nifty

We all make sacrifices for our obsessions. In my lifetime, I've eaten a LOT of Ramen noodles!:smile
