Didn't know if anyone has posted about Obamas idea to start striking coins with even cheaper metals guess my kids can grow up and say oh yea I got a 2013 quarter aluminum ms60
Collecting is never down the tubes. So many "classics" out there. Let 'em mint the "funky metal" coins and we'll probably collect them too....
As of right now Congress has the power to authorize metal content of coins, the Treasury secretary has asked for congress to relinquish that authority to him, but so far Congress has not ceded that power to the executive branch.
green isnt there know since of pride in what this country makes anymore I personnaly feel that next they will try and make them out of granite if they could just my thoughts and oppions guess what im trying to say is not coming out the way I feel and glad to know that Chip
I don't know. Did collecting go down the tubes after 1964 when 90% silver was removed from circulation coinage? Did it go down the tubes after 1969 when 40% halves were no longer minted for circulation? Did it go down the tubes after 1982 when 95% copper cents were replaced with 97.5% zinc cents for circulation?
I take that to be pride in workmanship. The US Mint (MHO) has always endeavored to make a superior product and I believe they will continue to do so, regardless of the metal content of the issue.
As collectables I would say yes to a certain degree to me the silver eagles gold coins and special proofs and special issues is whats left in modern day collecting mabey know one else feels this way
I agree green on that 100% I'm not taking away nothing from the mint I love coins just think its absurd to keep getting to cheaper and cheaper metal compositions
I collect coins, not metals, so it wouldn't matter to me. In fact I say more variety can only be a good thing, keeps it from getting boring! I don't think it'll happen though...the vending machine buisness seems to have a lot of sway, and to change the metal content so vastly would cost them lots of money to remake all their machines. Actually, I will buy Aluminum world coins simply because they are aluminum. I have long said that the US should go back to the original dollar size (Morgan, Peace, Seated, etc) but do a nickel/Aluminum clad instead of copper). So I guess you could say I collect one metal.
Hey BillyRay, my mom once got a plastic school nickel in change at the local McDonalds, in place of a real nickel...LOL (I still have it, I keep it with my tokens and medals just for laughs!)
When I was given a box of german coins, there were 200,000 marks and they were aluminum. I thought they were gimicks lol. Whos laughing now? :goofer:
