I just received an email regarding the Boston ANA Awards Banquet for the World's Fair of Money event and noticed that it is being held on the evening AFTER the show closes.

    ANA Awards Banquet
    119th Anniversary Convention
    Sheraton Boston Hotel
    Saturday, August 14
    7 p.m. Reception ξ 8 p.m. Dinner

I emailed the ANA and asked them about the timing of this event being after the show closed when many people who were not already gone will be travelling home that evening. Their reply was: "The show closes at 5:30pm on August 14th. Unless someone is taking a late flight on Saturday evening it should not be a conflict."

I replied that many of us living on the West Coast will in deed be on a plane heading home that evening. I received no further response.

Just curious if many of you would have attended had the event been held on an earlier night?

I will be attending the event but then I live in Quincy, just south of Boston. I am looking foreward to meeting some members there. I will be there all day, every day as I am in chargew of the Pages.

Saturday night means the attendance will be a fraction of what it would be on an earlier night unless all the other nights are full because of auctions. If I attend the show, I won't be around Sat. night.

I've never attended an ANA Show, but if they ever get back to Florida, I probably will.

I agree that the scheduling seems ill-conceived, and the only thing you can probably hope for is that a poor turn-out may give them reason to rethink the schedule for future shows.

Though it is probably too late to do anything about the Boston show, if I were you, I would certainly make my feelings known to those in the ANA who are in a position to do something about it. Have you considered expressing your feelings in a "Letter to the Editor" of the Numismatist?

I have posted about this to the show commitee Yahoo group which is read on a regular basis by the coordinators from the ANA. I suspect nothing can be done this year. This is a result, in part, due to the change in the show schedule this year. In the past the show has run through Sunday. When they chose to change the show so that it ends on Saturday they had already booked things like the Awards Banquet.

    Richard,

It sounds like you will have a challenging and, hopefully, rewarding experience ahead of you. Here's a little something in your honor.

I'm for any measures which attempt to keep dealers at the show selling coins for the full show schedule.

I went to the ANA show here in Los Angeles last year on the last day and probably 1/3 of the dealers were either not there at all or had already sent their coins back home and only had a portion of their inventory at the show. Not sure missing out on an awards banquet would stop too many dealers from splitting early though?

The banquet won't keep them at the show. Now that Sunday has been dropped they will be closing up on Friday and leaving early on Saturday if they can. I have seen this happen at a lot of shows that have dropped their Sunday hours.
