That pile of unwanted "stuff"

I figured I'd start a thread about an experience I had last night.
I often buy collections here in my hometown, and sell them for profit. Kind of like a small time dealer. So usually, in a collection there are thise little hoards of unwanted cents.
I can't really say, "I don't want these" so I always end up buying them along with everything else. The only problem is, I can't sell those "little stashes" of cents for anything as most of them are worth 5 - 25 cents.
So they just accumulate. Thousands of pennies :goofer: in jars and boxes take up space. So I decided to go through them and weed out the good from the bad, and spend the "bad".
Well lo' and behold. I actually upgraded two cents in my small cent set. One to MS, and one to VF-35
I am pleased as I haven't touched my small cent collection for quite a while. So I was pleased to find two upgrades and to finally weed out some unwanted clutter. Just thought I'd share a story and encourage you all to go through those hoards and maybe you'll find something good that you missed last time, or that you didn't even bother looking at last time.

I know what you're going through, Shawn. When every flat surface and more than one room contains bags, jars and plastic containers full of pennies (cents, if you prefer:smile), it's time to take action. I found 3 plastic bags last week that I didn't even know I had; two were full of wheats and one of earlier Canadian.

I was tempted just to roll them but I took some time to sort through them. That's where I found that "retained wire struck through" error I posted on the weekend. It almost wound up in a coin roll to be sold!

i am doing the same thing. so far i got 15 rolls of wheats, with plenty more to go. its ashame to cash them in for 50 cents a roll, but hopefully someone gets them that needs them. i also have bags of memorials i need to go through.

i still have a ton of unsearched wheats i need to look at. even though i only need a few more to complete. i hopefully will find an upgrade.

  9. Sorry, I just don't understand the concept of unwanted coins! Send them this way to a happy home if you want to :)

Seriously, I wish I could do what you are doing. I bet you've gotten some neat stuff.

This is the kind of Canadian cent that makes up the bulk of my collection....

And that is one of the nicer ones!

I sure wish I could get my hands on a few rolls of Canadian coins. I have a friend in Canada who's been helping me out with some coins (Thanks to him, my own roll finds and the help of some CoinTalkers, I have every year of Canadian cent from 1960-2008...but most of them need an upgrade), maybe I can get him to send me some rolls.

I did that once years back and found in my foreign stash a US 2 cent piece and a US 3 cent nickel.
At the time I guess I didn't know what they were lol
