(As I am still trying to get that hang of this new hobby, please bear with me if I use incorrect terms...) Does anyone know where I kind information on a 1963 Doubled Die Quarter? I have three of these coins and I was told that this type of coin is known as a "1-O-II." I am unable to find any information...can someone point me in the right direction? (Images used are from the buyer I purchased from)
Just so you don't get yelled at, the correct term is Doubled die.:smile As for confirming it, I have to leave it to the pros.
This will tell you the markers to look for on the different die states. Nice find BTW! http://www.conecaonline.org/content/washingtondoubleddies19631964.html
LT, if there is no doubling on the reverse, it is identified as FS-101 in the Cherrypickers Guide. (The 1-0-II is a CONECA assignment) If there is doubling on the reverse, it is FS-102. The CPG lists the FS-101 at $45 in MS65, but you shouldn't rely too heavily on that estimate. This variety is often found in Mint Sets. It will only be worth what someone is willing to pay. Chris
Wow...I checked out the website and it was like looking at a foreign language. Still learning I guess... I thank you for you insights. I purchased it because I like unusal coins (I consider the doubled die unusal, even though it might be more common then I think). Is the doubling on the reverse usually easy to spot?
A lot of those initialisms you are seeing refer to the die state(the age of the die basically), such as EDS(early die stage), MDS(mid-die state), etc. They really should have a legend on the page explaining these things!
