Why Whitman Stinks

I picked up a bunch of whitman folders at a local used book shop. Some were newer and some were quite old. Some had been used to store coins, and some had not. Figured for a buck apiece i couldnt go wrong. So i scooped most of them up save for the few that were for canadian coinage. I have never filed a type set folder so knowing i could just about get it done in one shot i started filling holes on the whitman20th century type. Got to the end where you are supposed to put a "birth year" set and choose a 68 proof that had a damaged holder. Maybe too nice to use on a whitman holder, but with the damaged packaging, low value, and the Kennedy half being impaired i went ahead. The cent wont stay in there!! What a raw deal! The hole is crisp and new , just too D@#$ big. I put together a pretty nice set too. :(. Now i guess i will have to upgrade to a better folder since i have the set almost complete. Any suggestions on what to buy for 20th century type?

    Kevo,

I had a similiar situation with the same folder, my 64 proof cent would also not fit in the hole. I did something a little unorthodox to remedy the situation. I affixed a thin strip of masking tape to the outside of the rim. Just enough to barely cover the rim. It probably irreparably damaged the "third side" of this coin, but what do I care, it's stayig in the album and it now fits in the hole perfectly, and looking at it you can't tell there's anything on the rim.

I love the idea of Type Sets. My suggestion is to buy a Capital Plastics Type set holder. you can display both sides of your coins without damaging them by either handling or the holder itself.

They are relatively inexpensive, inert, and won't damage the coins when you look at them.

Unfortunately, DANSCO doesn't make a 20th century type set book. They have the 7070.

Whitman doesn't really stink, they have their niche, it's just not a vehicle that would be used by a bit more advanced collector. Whitman caters to the YN,s, the arm chair coin collectors and the totally novice. Book stores carry these items and they are readily available to the consumers and at a relatively low price. They have issues with quality just like any other mass produced products, your going to run into this sort of thing just about everyday it seems.

Whitman has been around for a long long time and they deserve an modicum of respect for the role they provide.

    Happy Collecting

Without Whitman, there wouldn't be anyone else.

  10. Folders are a bad idea for coins in the first place. Excepting the state quarters I put in there before I really became a collector, I will never again put a single coin into a folder.

Edit: By the way, my entire collection of US and Canadian coins will eventually be in these plastic holders from Whitman, or Marcus as Whitman doesn't feel the need to make a holder that also includes the small size dollar.
