How do you guys dig up grass without managing to destroy it? My dad got very mad when I went over my parents' house and started digging, complaining that I was going to ruin his yard.

There's a couple of proper techniques for digging especially manicured lawns. If your target is only an inch or so down, pinpoint and use a dulled screwdriver to work it out. If the target is deeper, then you cut a horseshoe shape in the grass. Make sure the grass is still attached to the lawn at the hinge, flip it up dig out the dirt, find your target, replace the dirt and stomp down the "lid". If done properly you can't see the spot at all. I've dug thousands of holes in one park and I went back to the same spots and there's no indication of any digging at all.

I'd suggest checking out some of the metal detecting forums for more tips and etiquette.

For coins, my best find is a 1920 wheat in VF condition...and I'm in Canada :)

My best find is a cache of WWII machine gun bullets. It was in a slight depression and both ally and enemy rounds were found. I also found two bayonets the very same day. This was during March of this year and I was in Poland visiting relatives. Not too bad finds, eh? ;)

I've been digging up huge chunks each time... seems like everything I find is 4-8 inches down. I'll try the horseshoe technique at the schoolhouse.

I'll second the horseshoe technique, it really does help keep the grass alive.

If you don't already have one, I highly recommend getting a pinpointer. It'll save you a TON of time digging and locating your target.

My personal choice is the Garrett pro-pointer. I have one and won't go MD'ing without it.

There are other types/brands out there but the only other one I've used is one from White's so I really can't give an honest opinion about them.

that 1873 is better than the 66 I found. Mine had a vicious case of cancer and I couldn't heal hear. So I sent it to coin heaven with a 7.6

After reading this thread yesterday, I ran up to the local park to detect. Lasted 20 minutes because of rain, but I found 4 dimes, 7 pennies and a rifle bullet casing! Im wondering why there was a shell casing since it is a small city park. lol I handled it so I cant turn it over to CSI!

I always find bullets and shell casings in the parks and also playgrounds! May be just the sign of the times.

A rifle casing is especially more disconcerting being found in a city park... what cartridge size was it?

(not that I'm saying any other type wouldn't be either, but firing a rifle in proximity to a densely inhabited area is super irresponsible)

I don't know about bullets, but its huge. Probably 3 inches long. It could be pretty old, it was 6 inches below ground.

These items are from a short hunt this afternoon in a nearby park. We've been talking about bullets, well....

    A 6.5 m bullet:
