I was watching a program on the HISTORY channel earlier about Jesse James and they had some people on there metal detecting. They found a mason jar with a bunch of Morgan dollars and gold coins! I wish I could come across something like that!
Can't tell you. We metal-detectorists have a club with secret handshakes, treasure maps and everything!
My mom is president of the local historical society and won't let me metal detect at the old, unused school nearby... apparently there was a candy store across the street and she doesn't think I'll find anything... I'm gonna hit it up sometime late at night I think... like, 2am.
I had a buddy who hunted a park at night that was off limits and found a CC Morgan. Just don't get caught
That's the way to think. Try to picture the area that people would hang out especially in times gone by. One park, I was told, was hunted out. I went there because it was close to home and found the "hot spot". The area is a big open field but eighty years ago they had a grand stand at one side. In this hunted out park, I found hundreds of coins from 1870 to 1930 that had been missed by other hunters because they concentrated on the popular areas of today.
I still suck at using the one I bought. Haven't quite figured out how to make it ignore random crap and find nothing but the coins. It's got an auto-notching feature, but I haven't had much luck with that.
I've got a friend who's uncle has some land with cattle on it. One day I ask what the little shed was for. He just stored farming tools inside, but years ago in the 20's & 30's it was a concession stand where they sold soda pops and snacks during a small rodeo. That really got me interested except for one thing. If a person gets cornered by his uncle he'll talk all day long about cows. I'll have to wait til he takes his cows to auction...
The thing about using a metal detector is that at first you go after the good "safe" signals and gather the easy money. After, you realize that by using these "safe" settings you're missing gold, deeper (older) coins, tokens, etc. because they read as junk. Once I returned to digging everything, my "great" finds increased dramatically. Plus by reducing your discrimination you increase your depth. Remember that gold is an alloy - a mixture of materials so your machine will reject it.
My best spot or find was an old ranch. Anyways I found dozens of gold jerry bars hidden amongst what once was this ranch. Picked through it for the past six months. It's getting very dry recently might double check previous areas in case I missed a sucker. A mason jar filled with them would be gorgeous
I've been MD'ing since Aug of last year. So far I've found about $175-$200 in change. 3 gold rings, 2 gold braclets, about a dozen silver rings and a ton of junk rings.
FINALLY! It has been a long time, but yesterday I finally found a 14KT ring, small, kid's size, but still..... It is gold!
My time with my MD is running out... I don't plan on keeping it, and the return policy was 30 days, I think... Probably gonna hit up that schoolhouse tonight, late.
I have a White's MXT and I've noticed that most nickles will usually (but not always) show up around 16-18 on the VDI meter. most pull tabs are 20+. most of the newer one's come in right at 22 and the old 60's style pull tabs come in at 35. Just remember, when in doubt, dig it out.
Tres, right on! me too, found my first gold ring in quite a while just last saturday. Nothing beats the glimmer of gold peering out from the bottom of a small hole in the ground.
