Chespeake & Ohio Canal Co. and Misprinted $5

I was able to acquire the $5 bill while working for a grocery store as a teenager, and thought it was really cool. It was not until a few
years ago I realized that it could be worth quite a bit. The misprint appears to be the back printed partially on the front. Any possible ideas of it's worth? As for the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company bill, the only thing I've been able to find out is that it may be a transportation bill. I did find others similar to it online, but none it's denomination. Could someone possibly verify this for me, and
possibly an rough idea of worth. Personally these two are among my most priced bills, following my confederates and black eagle. Any information would be much appreciated. I have two attachments of these bills, but they are too large to upload. When I figure out a way to send it I'll do so.

If I knew what state it was from I could look it up in my North American currency book by Criswell, it is an old book and the prices are dated, but I could give you an idea of the rarity.

 

Chesapeake & Ohio

On the bill is says, precisely: Nine months after date The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Company Promise to pay on demand at their office at Frederick Maryland to Jacob Markell or bearer. The bill is a $20 denomination and the pay to person's name is hand written as well as the clerks name and one other name that I'm not sure who it belongs to. Also in the upper left at the top is No. 1122 B handwritten and the date off to the right, Septr 9, 1840. Hope this gives you all you need to look it up. How do you post photos, I'm still trying to figure it out. I have the bills scanned and waiting in my one folder but I can't figure out how to attach them. The insert image button I've tried but I don't know what to do with the pop-up it gives me.

Nope---not unless you have your own website where you could upload them there and then move them here by another way....if you have a site let me know and I can help you post them.

This note is Criswell C-244. I am going to get flamed, but it was worth about US$8.00 in the 1969 edition., it is not the most uncommon note by comparing to other notes I know are common.

 

Does it state what kind of condition it was to be worth that? And what about this Criswell you're speaking of, is it a reputable book? I'm still new to this all so I don't know. I would like to get a good, reputable book for currency so I can estimate my monies value. I have the red book for my coins. Do the have a red book for currency? And one other thing, what of the $5 bill, any ideas, hopefully GDJMSP will be able to post the pictures to help give everyone a better idea of what I'm talking about. Thanks again.

The Criswell book was a great book in its time, that is the key. It was printed in 1969. The price of $8 then reflected an Unc note, the value in this grade would have been about $2.50 then. As I noted earlier, it is not a particularly rare note, in fact as obsoletes go, it is fairly common. It does however have a good name on it, and a company that a lot of people are familiar with from history.

I wish I were qualified to valuate it for you, but it is best left to someone with more recent experience with obsoletes than myself.

Just remember...the Red Book isn't a good price guide....they are sometimes high and sometimes low.
The best thing for coins or paper money is completed online auctions.
