Brazil was the colony of Portugal until 7th September 1822, when don Pedro (the son of Joao VI the King of Portugal) declared independence. Don Pedro become emperor as Pedro (Petrus) I. In 1832 his son become the second Brazil"s emperor as Pedro (Petrus) II. In 1889 Empire was annuled and republic was established.
Those are really cool coins! They are especially interesting to me because I am trying to complete a full set of Brazilian coins. I'm not where close to getting these ones though. Very neat!
Fabntastic quality - I have a shoebox of coins and currency - I will start to show - all of you that know of these - please comment!! Lew
Sorry - getting used to the posts I have several coins in this series - although the reverses are different
Okay - this is currency - granted - but my friend Don Pedro II makes them popular. Notice one has the counter stamp that reduces the value - a normal Brazilian rip off scam by the government. This was normaly done with paper, not coins - coins were vacummed up.
And just a few more! 2000 Reis 1913 (no dashes between stars), 2000 Reis 1922 (Centennial), 200 Reis 1901
I have these photos to share. 1866 Nicely toned 1000 Reis. 1869 Petrus II 10 Reis with very fine detail on the reverse. 1869 Petrus II 20 Reis with the same very fine detail on the reverse. 1899 40 Reis Counter Mark 1895 20 Reis with incredibly fine detail on the reverse. I also have a neat set of coins from the Brazil Leprosy colony. I'll look for photos.
