I have a 1944 american penny with a D under the date,is this D significant?

I have a 1944 american penny with a D under the date,is this D significant? Is this a mint mark? I am a true greenhorn.

the "d" under the date is the mintmark that indicates that it was minted in denver. no letter under the date means it was minted in philadelphia, and an "s" means san francisco.

 

thanks for the quick reply. can you tell me what difference the mintmark makes in the value? i have a 1943 steel penny. are there any marks on it that i should look for?

I think you mean "1943" steel....

 

there really isn't a difference in value until you get to the higher grades. (ms62 and higher) 1944 is a common year, with the "s" mintmark being the lowest mintage at 282-million.

not trying to be mean, but the steel penny was made in 1943, not 1933. as far as mintmarks go, the "s" gets a little higher premium than the "d" and plain, but, again, only in the higher grades.
