This is the first coin I ever purchased. It was a Christmas gift for my dad in 1968. My father got me into coin collecting before that though he never paid over face value for his collection. I remember the thrill of riding the escalators up to the 8th floor of Foley's in downtown Houston where I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. There in front of me was a counter with coins I'd never seen. It was way beyond the occasional buffalo I could find. There were even cents with an INDIAN on them. Some were almost 100 years old! I remember thinking my dad would be thrilled if only I could afford to get him something that old. Is it the most valuable coin in my collection? It has been since I inherited it after my father's death in 2001.
Something of that nature is off the uber-coolness scale. Sometimes it's not how much you paid for something, it's the fact that the person you gave it to cherished it enough to hold onto it in it's old holder. Thumbs up! Happy Collecting
My sentiments exactly. How could anyone put a value on something like that? "uber-coolness".....Awesome word, BR549!
I won't hijack the thread, but I had a similar experience. Marshall, I hope you realize that coin has a total mintage of 1 (ONE). Don't do anything foolish with it - you are responsible for it. Otherwise the world WILL change in a very small way.
Don't say that in the bullion section...they'll throw knives in your eyes!! Great story. I know how you feel Guy~
