I'm still just getting into paper and haven't picked up much yet. Always liked the fractionals and couldn't pass this one up at $6. Very worn but interesting to me. It's a 1874 25 cent 3rd issue Allison/Spinner. Guy~
Congrats on the 1st Note..it is actually a 5th Issue Walker.. looks like a "long key" but it's hard t make it out.. On the upper left side of the seal should be a number..I can not see it on the note..(may be obscure)..it also appears to have a green cast..could be the scan but the note looks funny to me in a way.... Here is a note to compare it by...this one is the "short key... and this one is the "long key" RB
I have no idea, I was just reading the label that came with it lol . I figured for such a small price it was a neat piece to have. Wish it was in better shape though. Guy
Great little note. Circulated notes have a certain charm to them. I think it's the idea of the history they carry after changing hands so many times.
Nice find Guy :high5: and thanks Rickie for the 2 so that we can see the comparison with the key (makes it so much easier)
Thats weird. I cannot find a number anywhere where you said. There is a G on the right side of the seal, but even under magnification I don't see a number. But then, it's pretty worn. Guy~
It's a start & Fractionals were new to me years ago, never knew they exhisted till I found this Stanton, keep looking & reading ,you'll get hooked for sure.
I for one got hooked a few years ago at a local coin auction!!I now have complete type set of the 5 issues shy the Grant/Sherman note(separated front and back). At another auction,I attended, they had the Fractional shield in nice condition.I believed it went for $2600-$2800.Little by little I'm upgrading a few of them.
Wow ...Talk about Fractional Fever you got it ! That is quite an accomplishment to have the complete 5 type issues. I have a few myself missing the same Grant/Sherman front but have a back . The Shield is not mine ,I once had an opportunity to buy one that was in the flood (half way stained & frame falling apart but passed & now regret it !
Awe...I want a shield so bad!!! I think pretty much all of them were in that flood in the government building to some degree. The one you posted is a real nice one!!
I wish it was mine Rusty,I posted the picture for those who haven't seen one ,but someday I hope to buy one that nice. Most you see are in poor shape rotten frames ,water stained half way up from the bottom, from the flood,I think the only good ones are being held and rarely come up at auction or private sales.
The closet I will get to one is buying that poster they sell on Ebay LOL.I believe the shield with the pink background is much rarer than the one with the gray background.
What a great old photo, never have seen the pink background, you mentioned $2600 was that for the gray or pink shield ?
That is so awesome! Great photo. Also of note in that image is the safe with the landscape painted on the door. I love that the old safes had landscape paintings or decorations put on them. My parents have an old (empty and rather useless) Mosler Safe, a company that was located in Hamilton, Ohio, which has a hand painted landscape on it. They are usually idyllic scenes which probably exhibited the beauty of landscapes found around the safe maker's region.
Watch out Cole, collecting paper sneaks up on you. You get one, then you have to have another! But you won't regret it. Nice p/u.
