Hi. I was recently asked to sort through someone's coin collection that seems to span from about 1875 to 1975. Coins are mainly from Europe, Asia and Africa. I was able to identify all but the following 3. Any help (even identification of country of origin) will be greatly appreciated!
The last one is Venetian I believe. Can't tell you an approx date or Doge though - I'm only familiar with the gold versions and don't have books for the silver
Brendan, I have no idea what the first two are but #3 is either a Venetian grosso or one of the Serbian copies that circulated in the 13-15th centuries.One side depicts the current Doge of Venice sharing a staff with St. Mark the patron saint of the city and the other is Christ on a throne.It is difficult to say exactly which doge (to me anyway) Here are some of mine and you can see the similarities.Feel free to push back that 1875 date a 4-5 hundred years and congratulations!

Doug, Fortunately,coins don't take up a lot of space.I'm off work all next week and I'm thinking about creating a virtual tour of my coin storage setup,with photos (go figure!) It's a surprisingly small area of one spare room.Should be fun. Free preview...
re coins hi there did u find out what country the first 2 coins were from? only I have one with a similar block on whith the skewer thing thru the heron type bird as well
The first one is definitely a temple token. The second one is definitely a token. Whether it is a temple token? dont know. It is written 'la ilahi illallah' means 'all the glory belongs to allah'. I've seen these with dealers in India and they sell them as tokens. The third one, I dont know anything about it. The first temple token depicts St.Tulsidas or St.Kabirdas or St.Surdas. All these singers have almost similar features. I cant distinguish them well.
The third coin could be either a Venetian coin,or it could be a Byzantine coin.The first 2 pieces are definitely Indian temple tokens. Aidan.
For your sake, I sure hope that you don't let the same people know where you live and that you store collectible coins with that level of security.
You have to end up securing your place almost to the extent that Fort Knox goes to.I don't know if anyone has tried to break into Fort Knox yet. Aidan.
