Has anyone heard of a WAM on a dime before? There are no dates that do have this. The last photo is a normal closed AM that has same date and Mint mark.

No, I haven't heard of one..but I would be interested to know if it is something to be discussed further. I still am looking for the all silver 1965 dime. Let me know if you find one:)

Looking at how low relief the letters are on the wide AM I am prone to believe that this is the result of an extremely worn/polished die. As they polish the die the lowest profile parts of the letters are removed from the die which created the space between the letters

    Just my opinion,

Interesting thread. I'll keep watching. Roosevelt dimes are one of my favorite series.

    ziggy9:
If the die was worn, the letters would be bigger, not smaller. You have to remember that the letters are raised, so the die is indented. A worn out die means a bigger indention, which means larger letters.

A polished die means that the area nearest to the base of the letter is removed by polishing. this is the widest part of the letter as it tapers inward as you ge to the highest point. This polishing will cause the letters to get thinner not wider.

This is the reason on the Lincoln cents you have to check the initial location to verify that it is indeed a wide AM and not die polishing.
