On page 14 of the ANA's The Numismatist (May). There is an article written by him that looks like a letter he mailed in.
Nice work Bill and keep it up!!

  3. Thanks Duke! I've actually got a pretty good record, I've sent two letters to The Numismatist and both of them were printed! :D

So what all do you think of my writing there?

It was a good writeup. I'll be honest with you though that I still don't think facebook is meant for that roll. My wife does facebook but I never have and probably never will. It doesn't grab me. I'd be happier not having everyone know what's going on in our daily lives. To me, we have e-mail and cell phones for sharing information that is worth while. These social networking sites seem narcisistic to me.

But anyway, I guess I just don't see an additional benefit it would provide beyond all the forums that are already available for exchanging information. Where the vast majority are already willing to participate due to the fact of remaining anonymous. And ALL, 100%, are there because they are interested.

Say your collection was worth $20k. You kept 15k worth at the bank and 5k at home for you to look at. Just as an example that might represent somebody on this forum. Who knows?
You show this and that on facebook to a list of 20, 50, 100, 200 or more friends, of which, the vast majority knows exactly where you live. Then you have a break in and coins and other valuables are stolen. Now your entire friends list (most of which have no interest in coins anyway) become suspects. People that never needed to know, now only serve to complicate tracking down who did it.

That's the only concern and unfortunately the reality of the world we live in. Now, you may say "my collection isn't that valuable." "It wouldn't be worth stealing." Well, where do you draw the line? If somebody's collection is only worth $100, it's worth stealing to somebody and is more than anybody wants to lose. I feel as most probably do, that it's better to be safe than sorry. I'm to a point where if just the storage supplies were stolen it would be a tragedy. Although I'm quite satisfied with the security measures in place.

    Just my .02 cents.

Congratulations, Bill! Always nice to see published articles/letters by members.

    Re: Facebook

I agree with Vess1. I've never been interested in Facebook, Myspace or any of the other sites that encourage divulging personal daily activities. Most of us are reasonably careful on this forum and others where we focus on our hobby about letting out too much information. We all take precautions whether it's showing a few items or just discussing specific topics without revealing the extent of our collections.

The experienced (long term) members can usually ferret out newer members that have hidden agendas. Those don't usually last very long. Also, it's a small world and soon word will spread to other forums.

A little paranoia is a good thing security-wise.

  8. Thanks for the honest input! I did just recently create an album to show a few of my things, but I coded it so that only the people I chose to be able to see it are actually able to. If any of you on here (except for the few on here I am friends with) went to my page and looked for it, you wouldn't be able to see it. So I'm not that concerned with that aspect. (Most of my family is not even able to see it)

I use my real name on the forums so total secrecy is pretty much out of the question already, so why shouldn't I share an aspect of my hobby with a select few people who are into the same hobby?

    Still, thanks for the input!
