This Quarter is out of the three coin set. The fold the set came in was in bad shape but the coins were good. this one though caught my attention. It has not been altered in any way. It is gold colored all around, I tried to give a few angles. It has not been plated. I bought the set in 1997 and have always wondered about it.

Because of the conditon of the fold, I got it real cheap!

Welcome to the forum Rujam. Your coin probably toned because of the packaging.

Rujam, what type of fold or holder is it in? I've never seen the leatherette material shown surrounding your coins on any 1976 Bicentennial set.The proof set used velour and the mints were in plya-film and cardboard.Maybe there were other packages?

There are a myriad of environmental and storage factors which can affect the toning of a coin, some of them will turn golden in colour if the temperature is right, and plastics in the holders bleed etc.

It is all variant on what your coin is stored in etc, and just because it is in a mint holder doesn't mean if the conditions are right that it won't tone.

    thanks

    Charlie32 thanks for the welcome!

Mikjo0 -- It is out of its original holder. This holder was the Square version in your pic. The leather is just my wallet I had it setting on. For now it is just in a basic coin holder.

Vityaz -- Thanks for your input!

Do any of you think this coin could retain value?
Does the toning take away from the value?
And finally, Being out of the proof Holder, How much does this effect the value?

I have never seen gold toning on a quarter before. I wonder what kind of a reaction from the holder would cause that.

Everything value wise with a collectable coin is dependent on who desires it and how much. Of course there are toning fanatics that are found in abundance at coin shows, and any perusal of eBay for awhile proves this hypothesis.

If it is particularly desirous in colour to someone it is worth a premium. I have 1970 British Proof Sets that have toned in my opinion attractive hues of purple and rose. Others might find them not so attractive and would value them less than I do.

I have several Statehood quarters with a "gold " toning, so I don't think it is that uncommon. IMHO, it is an attractive look.

Hi Rujam not sure if you know but there are Gold Plated verisons of the state quaters around and I have seen them in similar packaging to the original as well as Colorized and Holographic ones. Hope that this is of some help and Welcome to the Gang

Thanks De orc--- I took the coin to a dealer In Wilmington. He seemed to have good knowledge of coins. He looked at it closely with a stereo microscope ect. and confirmed that this coin has been plated with nothing.

By the way, there is a small plain spot on his cheek. this is almost at the center point of the coin.
