Hello, I have some older foreign mint sets that are in the soft PCV plastic from the mint. These definitely contain PCV because i can see the green ring on the copper coins. Would it be wise to remove them all from this packaging and put it in more modern cases, or would that take away from the value as a "set" ? These are 60's germany proof sets with silver. Thanks, greg
Greg, if you leave them in that original packaging those coins are going to degrade even more. Get those coins out ASAP.....
Ok, so it will not take away from the value of the set if they are removed from mint packaging? The sets I have are fairly rare, so I want to be sure.
Ok, the more I think of it, the more I realize that I asked a dumb question. How could degrading coins be worth more than mint state coins taken from the package, Duh. Ok thanks! taking them out now!
Greg, it's not a stupid (dumb) question. I collect a lot of modern US mint and proof sets and I feel the value of these sets lies in OGP. However, if you see something "cooking" within that packaging, the time to remove those coins has arrived. Hopefully it's not too late......
Thanks Green. I mispoke, they are mint sets not proofs. Anyway, heres the damage. Is this pretty bad? Should the silver be dipped or anything like that? the 1970 coins seem to be much worse than the 1965's
I've been dismantling a lot of sets recently. The first sign that a problem exists can be too late. I'll let others get a premium for intact sets if there ever is one (some exist now), I'm saving the coins. Normally what I do is remove the coins and stabilize them in alcohol and store the packaging separately. Sometimes even the packaging brings good money. When the packaging goes bad I toss it in the garbage.
I couldn't bear seeing these coins get any worse. I dismantled them, dipped them and put them in flips. I have no plans of selling them since they came from my dads collection. Thanks for the info.
