Interesting, the article states that there exists speculation about creating a Nickel made of porcelain and embedded with an ID chip. Having done a lot of feasibility studies with respect to ID chips in the work that I do, this definitely concerns me. Cost isn't one, if what they are recommending involves RFID, as the cost for each chip is much cheaper than a nickel each. Counterfeiting? Yes, certainly it could be a deterrent. I agree it may seem to some there could be a conflict with privacy, as they may think the government has nothing better to do but track you and your money and see what you buy. But then, wouldn't that be called a credit/debit card? And who doesn't have a cell phone these days? If you think you can't be tracked because you have your phone off or the gps feature off, you're sadly mistaken....just ask the FRA who does just that with us at work. No matter what, you can always be tracked, kept tabs on, located....if they want to find you. Guy~
I disagree. Cellphone companies and credit/debit card companies are not agencies of the U.S. Government. Albeit not very convenient, also, cellphones and credit/debit cards are elective choices.

Perhaps. IMO that logic doesn't make it a legitimate justification nor at the root, a function of coinage. It seems we'll will disagree regardless. So let's just agree that we disagree? My OP was more of an FYI, me having the same concerns at the get-go that Doug has expressed.
