I found this 1856 O dime with the 56 of the date doubled. I have tried to find info on this error, with no luck. I was wondering if anyone has seen this error. Please reply if you can. I have attached a scan of the error. Thanks for your time.
Well it certainly is an repunched mintmark. Good eye. Breen lists the coin as having 16 obverse dies, 8 reverses. Can you measure the O mintmark. That will help me to provide which die your dime was minted. While some are rare, the repunched mintmark really isn't.
1856 O re-eng 56 DIME Thanks for your info National Dealer. I have included a scan of the reverse. I hope you can measure the O. Thanks for your help with this error. Regards Woody
Thanks for reply, the measurement are for left to right outside are 1.1mm, the inside measurement for left to right is 0.57mm and for top to bottom outside is 1.33mm and the top to bottom inside is 1.03mm. The measurement should be very close. Thanks again.
I would suggest that you have this coin looked at. referrence Breen numbers 3296, 3297 You could have a very nice repunched date. Don't get your hopes up, but it is worth having somone look at.
Thanks for your help. My hopes are not up, I like the thrill of the hunt the most. I have been looking through the web for info on this error and always turned up empty handed over the last three weeks. I happened apon this form today, a great place for a variety of info. One more question, can you suggest someone that can look at this coin and let me know if it is a known or unknown repunched date? I thank you for your time.
Well the known part is easy. Yes it is known. The Walter Breen encyclopedia of US coins is the ultimate referrence book. I would take that coin to a major show, with the referrence numbers that I gave you, and have Anacs look at it. If they think it is the 3297, have it certified with the breen number listed, and contact a real auction. Something like Bowers and Merena
1856 O Double Date I too have found this variety of coin and am wondering what you found out about it.
This is a really old thread and I don't know if the guy that started this thread will come back with more info---I don't think he has posted since this thread. Maybe someone else will know something that can help you. Speedy
I tried to get his email address but it wasn't available. Another dead end. I have only found 2 other coins like this one on the net. It's kind of exciting and frustrating at the same time. Thanks
Howdy wild_catt - Welcome to the Forum !! The variety's existence has been verified and the Breen classification number provided. What else exactly do you want to know about it ?
With coins of this age such things as repunched dates, overdates, repunched mint marks etc are not really that uncommon. As a result, varieties like this don't have much bearing on value. Value for these coins, like any other, is based on the condition or grade of the coin - not on the variety. This particular coin with the 56 in the date repunched south is also classified as a Fortin-104. And if you wish to learn more about it then I would suggest that you access and join the web site of the man who wrote the book on them - Gerry Fortin. The entire book is available on-line and you will find the site - HERE
