Just curious on the value you all would place on this cleaned 1799 dollar coin. Do you look at the details and give it a grade ... then knock of 50% because of the cleaning? If 50% is not right, what % should one knock off? It's interesting that the bid on this coin is up to $860 on 5/13/10 with 18 bidders in play. http://cgi.ebay.com/1799-Bust-Silve...em&pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item1c12537312
The seller says tooled, the number on the slab, 94, says Altered Surfaces. That can be harshly cleaned, re-coloring, whizzed - just about anything. But the cost/value will be determined by the variety more than anything. Even problem coins of this date and with that level of detail can sell for $2000 or more. If it is the right variety.
I opened the thread and said $1,500. In truth, I don't follow these coins closely, so take the above FWIW.
Hey thanks for all the input guys ... it's very helpful!! The seller says it shows XF details ... and the PCGS guide would price that at $4,750 ... currently the highest bid is a bit over $1000 ... so i am guessing this will end up selling between $2000 and $3000 (maybe) will be interesting to see.
The series of early federal dollars is one series that has seen huge price increases for coins in PCGS genuine holders. This is probably due to fact that the market is flooded w/ fakes and it seems as though everyone desires to have at least one example in their collection.
Exactly what I've been thinking :thumb: This phenomena seems to be happening all around, not just with this series...
That was an awesome estimate, came within just a hundred dollars. Even with the issues that may be with this coin, it really does look great, and it looks like a stunning piece to have in hand.
$2,000 seems about right. Really a nice looking coin from the images, even if not unmolested. Very meaty.
Well, apparently some people here believe, that if a coin is altered its only worth silver value:mouth::crying:
For coins that are 150+ years old or better, I'm very forgiving about very mild or questionable cleaning. The detail and the beauty of the coin has more influence on me. I'm glad to see this coin achieve such a worthy price. If I had the extra cash I wouldn't be ashamed to bid on it either.
This coin might make an encore appearance on ebay without the slab and sporting a darker color and much more theatrical story.
that coin gets put in a genuine for altered surfaces and this coin get tabbed MS 65???? http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1140&Lot_No=519#Photo
Too bad the coin is only worth about $600, I just threw that out there as bait  10% of the fishermen catch 90% of the fish
cute move. Well, it did look like a nice piece. But, $600? well, I agree, but apparently the bidders disagreed with you & me.
