Does the rim of a coin have to be perfect ( same size all around the coin)for it to be considered high end or a gem? or would that be considered a weak or bad strike if it is not. Take the new quarters for instance. most of them, the rim or collar is thicker or thinner in parts. Almost like it was'nt centered right when it was struck. Thanks in advance CLAW
Perfect no, but a well centered coin is a part of it. It's been considered as being important since the idea of grading began in the 1800's. I've seen plenty of high grade coins, 65, 66 that were not perfectly centered. But the average person would never even notice. But the true gems - the vast majority of them are well centered.
Thank you Doug, I have never heard that before or read it. But I was right assuming that. I have seen many gems that are not centered and wonder why. CLAW
