Picked up a Set (excluding 1916 D, 1921 D, and with a beat up 1921) Merc set for $105 at auction. 76 Dimes total. Didn't seem like a bad deal considering that's below current melt values.

It's in a one of those old school classic plastic cases. Not sure if I should leave them in or open them up and put them in flips and album them. Kind of a pain to keep them in a bulkly plastic holding since their not going to be on display in the case like that.

How old school is that holder? If the insert is not archival quality i would open that holder up and leaving the mercs in the cardboard put it away in a wooden chest of drawers or dresser for a few years.

Not necessarily--try to sell a set like this w/o the keys and you will be in for an rude surprise.

Excellent set! I'd leave them just the way they are, but that's just me.

I have a 1916 D if you want to complete the set.

I'm not looking to flip it. Probably take the good ones and then slowly upgrade the weaker ones.

That looks like a good pick up to me!
You gonna try to fill the other holes?

  13. If you can get classic silver coinage at melt, that is always a good buy. Congrats. TC

I blew this pic up to 400x on a HD monitor. These look pretty nice, all had full rims +. I don't think he did that badly. Of course, if he tries to sell to a dealer, he will be lucky to get 8x face. At least around these parts.

I like it. From the image they all seem to match in color.
Sounds like the price was right as well.
