I only recently started collecting, so go easy on me They are all half crowns except the 1819 George III crown And sorry for the light, its not the best in my room, but I wanted to get some shots up.
Some very good coins there jedbiahbob! I particularly like the Victorian 1889 half-crown you have there, in the jubilee head issue. Do you mainly collect crowns and half-crowns, or do you collect other coins as well? Hope many more come your way!
I've only recently started collecting and it is mostly half crowns because they are more affordable than the crowns I'm really just interested in silver coins in general, but the ones from the UK are some of my favorites
Very nice beginning to a collection there! I particularly like the George IIII. I collect shillings, and am trying to collect one from each monarch. This is my most recent purchase:
I'm trying to collect a shilling from every monarch (plus the commonwealth period) as well. I've decided to ignore the testoons of Henry VII and VIII, because they are ridiculously expensive and they aren't regarded as 'shillings' per se. Unfortunately he Mary/Phillip and Commonwealth ones are worth silly money, so it might take me a while yet.... After that, I might move on to sixpence and halfcrowns from Edward VI onwards.....
That's a great coin there physics fans! Makes me wish Corbitt's auction could come about sooner! I would love to purchase some Georgian coins now, rather than Victorian as I had planned.
I need extensive training when it comes to foreign coins, but I do enjoy and apprciate them. I find it interesting that the reverse on these Bristish 1/2 crowns are exactly the same as the canadian gold soverigns. http://www.jandm.com/script/getitem.asp?CID=3&PID=50
Actually, calling those gold soverigns Canadian coins is a bit misleading... They were made by the Canadian mint, but they are still British coins. India has made a similar gold soverign for the British. To the best of my knowledge, Great Britian is the only one that use the St. George and the dragon motif on their coins.
The Russians have a St. George coin. http://russiancoinsale.com/russia-50-rubles-st-george-dragon-slayer-2010-gold-6
Cool stuff Jed, I like the George the fourth coins... I have always liked them.... I bought this 1817 shilling within the past two years for less than USD 20, but can't seem to find them for near such a price now. My English silver collecting started out with late Victorian maundy coins and such, and to this day I continue to have a soft spot for a nice maundy.... Seems you have the start to a fine collection, keep up the good work.... P.S. I'm still waiting to get me one of those George IV crowns, I fancy the portrait.
That's a nice Ed VII 2and6 there. They're getting quite difficult to find in reasonable grade in any given year....
