Did you notice the word Presidents? It's a plural. Todays article is about currency (coins and paper) bearing more than one American President on it (obverse, reverse or one on each side. Before we explore today's "trivia" article, I want to share a list containing the names of eleven (11) previous presidents of the United States. "Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, George Washington, James Monroe, Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan." That list is in a specific order for a specific reason which will be revealed to you near the end of this article. For now we will focus our investigation on coins. 1923 leads us to the minting of a coin honoring the Monroe Doctrine which features the profiles of James Monroe and John Quincy Adams (photo courtesy of Coin Page): http://www.coinpage.com/coin-image-6503.htm Let me bring your attention to the right-facing personnas of George Washington and Calvin Coolidge on the 1926 Sesquicentennial of American Independence commemorative half dollar (photo courtesy of Wikipedia): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:S...endence_half_dollar_commemorative_obverse.jpg 1991 witnessed the minting of the Mount Rushmore (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theador Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln) Commemorative Coin series producing a Half Dollar, Dollar (silver) and $5 gold piece [photo of the Half Dollar (same design on all three coins) courtesy of Wikipedia]: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Mount_Rushmore_commemorative_half_dollar_obverse.jpg The South Dakota State Quarter also featured the Mount Rushmore Memorial (photo courtesy of Coin Page). Remember - all State Quarters feature President George Washington on the obverse: http://www.coinpage.com/coin-image-4632.html 1999 New Jersey State Quarter's reverse features George Washington crossing the Delaware. I know what you're thinking, " This is supposed to be about currency with a plurality of USA Presidents featured on them." You are right. Take a good look at that person standing behind President Washington holding the flag. It's James Monroe (photo courtesy of Wikipedia). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1999_NJ_Proof.png Our next "USA Presidents on Currency" item is the 1976 $2 Bill featuring an engraved modified reproduction of the painting The Declaration of Independence by John Trumbull on the reverse. Recognize John Adams and Thomas Jefferson? (photo courtesy of wikipedia): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:US_$2_reverse-high.jpg Let's not omit the 2003 Illinois State Quarter (A President on each side) Photos courtesy of Coin Page: Obverse (Washington): http://www.coinpage.com/coin-image-276.html Reverse (Lincoln): http://www.coinpage.com/coin-image-275.html I saved the best for last. This bill is next to last. (photos courtesy of Wikipedia): Obverse: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:5000f.jpg Reverse (Presidents Madison and Washington): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:5000b.jpg This is our last "USA Presidents on coins" specimen. This photo is courtesy of PGA Collectors Society. Click photo for enlargement:: Remember that list of 11 USA Presidents at the beginning of this post? "Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, George Washington, James Monroe, Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan." Look at the photo of the reverse of the coin. Enlarge it. That's the Statue of Liberty in the center surrounded by the 11 Presidents: Thomas Jefferson is at 1:00, James Madison is at 2:00, George Washington is at 3:00. JFK is 10th at 11:00 and President Reagan (#11) is at 12:00. The coin is a 1987 Isle of Man Crown struck to commemorate the Constitution of the United States of America. Isle of Man authorized 4 different coins to celebrate the event: a Gold 1/2 Crown, a Silver Crown, a Silver 5 Crown and a Silver 10 Crowns: http://coins.www.collectors-society...l.aspx?UserCoinID=18406&UserCollectionID=1056 For a clearer photo click the rondomons.nl link and scroll down to listing "176 1 Crown 1987 United States Constitution Proof sold {camera icon} http://www.rondomons.nl/index.php?page=coins&pid=195 Hope you enjoyed... I liked it Clinker. Thanks for posting it. As for that last coin how much does it run as it was sold out...
Very enjoyable post. When I first started reading it I told myself that I could name them. Dang! I was soooo wrong. :thumb:
Hi Duke Kavanaugh... ...I pay no attention as to prices. I only try to find photos so you readers can see the coin or design featured. Here's a high five for commenting :high5: Clinker
Hi, again, Art... But one or two more reads will give you that ability AND you'll have more chances to name the presidents in future posts... Clinker
