..Round 12 recap: Well,, if you copied Lehigh, you did well...... everyone who simply copied and pasted his answers, please raise thier hands.... PCGS grades: 1949D/S - MS65 > only Duke made mention of the potential for a D/S.... 1954S/D - MS63 > wow,, no one mentioned the S/D,, at it's one of the easiest to see of the of series imo... and in the pics imo... 1942D - MS66 1942D - MS66 > I really did not expect to see as many folks calling both 42D correctly as there were,,, must be Lehigh. I'd have taken the bait on this one, noting the steps in the first one and then fuller steps in the second, and then probably going 65 and 66.... or worse. Anyway, the second is a nicer coin imo,, more appealing tone and luster and reverse detail. I guess something I'm not seeing on the obverse of the second is not as nice as the first.... or simply both fall into the 66 range of detail and luster.... Awards for this set of coins: Best - Lehigh / Ldhair / Mark_h / Duke - .25 HA - Chip / Swish - 1.50 Others: RLM's - .50 Bigjpst - .50 Leadfoot - .50 Raider - .50 Badthad - .75 BQcoins - .50 Tonedcoins - .50 On to round 13,,,, then a fun break.
It probably would have been a better strategy for me to wait and post last, but pride got the better of me.
Yeah,, I saw your quick post and it's accuracy and just shook my head, threw my hands up, and thought for sure that someone would hit an exacta simply by taking you base and then maybe tweeking one or two coins one grade... but nope,,, your first to post stood tall throughout the round. Nice grading btw....
I originally had the 54-S as MS63 but the TPG's are very lenient with that date because it is one of the worst strikes of the series. In addition I thought it might get a bump for being S/D. I was wrong. I needed that round, was slipping in the rankings and losing my confidence.
If you don't mind sharing some wisdom on this series, I have a hard time seeing this coin at a 63. I see the pitting around jeffersons face, but thought it might be rusty die, or something to that effect. but the obverse didn't really look distracting at all. Or did the hits on the steps on the reverse warrant this grade? I am still really new at grading and can't believe I have been as close as I am so far in this contest. Any feedback would be appreciated...
I don't mind at all. There are a lot of major marks on this coin. If you look at the 49-D above it, you will see marks buy they are mostly small nicks. The 54-S has some really major marks including some in the focal areas of the coin. A big one on his cheekbone, his chin, and in his hair. There are also major marks on his coat and the reverse field above the dome. Also the photo is overexposed and hiding smaller marks in the fields. Planchet irregularities are usually confined to the jawline and upper coat collar. These don't affect the grade and are evident on the jawline of this coin. In the end, there is no way PCGS would give this coin a gem grade with all of those major marks. MS63's are usually pretty rough. My guess is that the overexposure is hiding more than I thought because PCGS will usually give a bump for a variety like this.
thank you. I guess I should have spent a bit more time on this one..I did see the big mark on his cheek, and the marks on his coat(which didn't really look too bad me.) Its funny when I first started to learn grading I read the books, applied what I learned and found I was grading way too conservatively, so I tweaked my opinions a bit and now I think I am a little too willing to give a higher grade. This is definately a great learning experience. thanks again.. Jay
