Tape or glue? That is the question

I use old Whitman Folders to hold some of my foreign coins. Even though they fit, sometimes they will fall out. I have been using double sided tape to keep them in the hole. Is tape safe for that or should I use that blue glue that comes in a stick and you pull apart? These coins are not worth much, basically I get them at the coin shop for 20 cents apiece.

Tape is a no-no! Glue is a no-no! You would be better off buying 2x2 holders with the vellum windows. If you don't like the idea of using staples to close them (which might damage coins in adjacent holders) you can always get the self-seal variety. You can also get the red 2x2 storage boxes which can hold a lot more than most Whitman folders.

As stated, go pick up some 2X2s and put them in the clear binder pages.

I use 2X2 holders for most of my foreign coins already. What is wrong with tape though? Just curious.

    What 9Ball Said~

I have some old stuff that had been abused both ways with glue & tape.

    Nether worked out so well.

BTW, 9Ball. Good to see you back from your endarterectomy.

You have fallen into the "trap" that all too many fall into. When the coin won't stay in the hole, find something that will make it stay there. Tape and/or glue are the most common choices. But either one harms the coins so they are not a good choice.

But your problem is that you don't have anything else to keep your coins in. Albums specifically built for the coins won't work because you have too many different coins. And nobody wants forty eleven different albums, even if you could find them. So what do you do ? You use tape or glue.

Well, let me give you a suggestion and a little trick ;)

Instead of using tape or glue, once your coins are in the folder put a piece of Saran Wrap over top of the coins, stretch it tight and around the back. Then tape the Saran Wrap to itself - not the back of the folder. Then get a blow drier, turn it on high and quickly pass it over the wrap, front and back. Don't hold it there long, you don't to heat up the coins, just the wrap. The heat will make it shrink and tighten it up. Then it will hold your coins in place.

No glue, no tape, no harm to the coins ;)

Thanks for the tip. I'll try that. Not all my coins fall out but once in a while one will and it is aggravating.

I guess a question would be the purpose of the album storage. If for instance it was to show people in a way nicer than a binder with plastic pockets, and since the coins are not valuable, go for it. Sure purists may shriek, but I know a serious collector who likes to shoot buffalo nickles from 50 yds. He likes his collection of them in different calibers :)

By the way, modern tape will not damage the metal of the coin, but it will alter any toning process so that in a period of time, even with the tape removed, the toning/patina pattern will be obvious. I bought some archive "sticky" dots from a museum place that are used to hold things in case of earthquakes, etc. and they work very well and won't damage the surface, but they will still produce the altered toning/patina effect. Just to ward off the comments,

DO NOT DO THIS TO A RARE or VALUABLE COIN :)

The primary reason that I suggested 2x2 holders and storage boxes is that I got the impression that your collection of foreign coins consists of multiple countries and/or multiple denominations. You can purchase holders of varying sizes to accommodate smaller or larger diameters, and by using the boxes, you can move them around and/or insert others easily. The vinyl pages might require that you shift a dozen or more coins from one slot to another to accommodate a new addition. You can organize the contents of each box alphabetically by country and denomination and add additional boxes as the collection grows.

I used to use Elmer's Glue to glue my cents in their holes.

I picked up a 1910 p from roll searching, it has a large dab of glue on the back of it, it is dinged and bent so I am experimenting with evoo to see what that will do to the glue and the coin, so far it has been in the evoo almost 48 hours and the glue seems to be holding on tight to the coin, it also has a little bit of paper with the glue.

It had to be in someones album and they either just got rid of it, or their heirs did.

Please keep posting the results. I have found several old Whitman folders that had tape over the coins. Some would be nice if I could get them cleaned a bit.

I usually use tape. That covers up the marks I made pounding the coin into the into the holder with the handle of a butter knife.:)
