Yesterday, I bought an unopened bank bag of 1963 cents. It's still sealed with the lead tab. Since the only error/variety that I know of for 1963 cent is the "hanging 3", and the fact that I don't know how roughly the bag has been handled over the last 47 years (diminishing the chances of an MS66 coin) I'd like some feedback as to what to do with it. Should I open it or sell it intact. I paid $40 for the $20 bag.

Personally I'd open it... but that's just me...

Odds are there isn't anything there... but you never know.

Why did you buy it in the first place?

First one I had ever seen and it was an impulse buy. It was the third month in a row that this dealer brought this to the show and each time he dropped his price. Yesterday he was down to 2 cents each and I bit.

It's a neat item to have but I kinda like looking at coins more than a cloth bag. I know that there are others out there that would appreciate it for what it is so I felt it would be better in a collector's hands than to see it go back to the bank and disposed of.

    How's that for justification?:D

    Lol! Tempting.....but no.

I spoke to another dealer who said the fellow I bought this bag from may have several other bags. If he has a 1962 (or earlier) or a 1965 bag, I would buy those and open them and look for errors and varieties. In 1962 there were the harp and guitar varieties as well as a DDR. In 1965 there were four variations, one that was quite pricey. The 1963 really didn't have anything to speak of.

So for the time being, I'll just be the temporary guardian of this bag until I decide to sell it.

Gee, maybe the "cap" and the brockage coins struck by the cap are inside. As most quality control "back in the day" was by weight.....you could have a true "thimbul" or a "spoon" or any number of things. To go by published known varity's is shall we say safe.......

    ....or a 1963 Pennache! :D

I'd rather gamble if there are other bags available. A sealed bag is kinda cool and once it's opened it could just be another bunch of pennies, I mean cents.

In the meantime everybody is going to have to wait:eating:
