Just wanted to share a couple with you all Valens AE3. AD 367-370. D N VALENS P F AVG, diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right / GLORIA ROMANORVM, Emperor walking right, head left, holding labarum, grasping bound captive at the top of the head, (not sure what in field), TES in ex. Thessalonica http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thessaloniki Constantine AE3. 322 AD. CONSTANTINVS AVG, laureate, mantled bust left holding eagle tipped sceptre / BEATA TRANQVILLITAS, altar inscribed VO/TIS/XX, surmounted by globe, three stars above, STR dot in ex. Trier RIC VII 343 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trier
Thanks whish I could have gotten a better pic of the obv. An interesting thing about that one is where it was minted, Trier. "In 395 the Roman administration abandoned the city, leaving the locals to their own defense; this marked the end of the effective authority of the Empire in Gaul."
Interesting. I havent bought any new ancients as of late. Been back on upgrading more of my U.S. type set. :/
Maybe a similar example? I got this one last year...looks like a dead-ringer for the top coin. Do you think they are the same design from the same mint?
They're definitely from the same mint. The mintmark is in the exergue there. It's TES, which refers to the Thessalonika mint. The B to the right shows that it's from the second officina of that mint, but I can't read that mark on the OP's coin, so I can't tell you if it's was made by that same group or not. In any case, I don't think it's a die match, as the arm of the emperor looks a bit different to me.
Really cool Randy... I like the column reverse on the second one... Interesting note about Trier too.... I only have one coin from there, but I like it alot... mostly because it is the very first Roman coin I ever bought in my entire life.... for 6 bucks US, still holds a special place in my collection.... I'm sure you guys know that feeling... obv: CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C rev: camp gate, star above - PROVIDENTIAE CAESS, PTR - Trier.
nice one yeah I still love my first ancients. This is my very first one (much nicer , and less fuzy in hand)
